With abundant and powerful processing capabilities, low-cost data storage solutions, and ruthlessly competitive, yet incredibly lucrative markets, every company in the world seeks quantitative driven decisions. In this course, we will study management science, which focuses on quantitative methods that aid in making effective decisions in a business environment. Students will learn to formulate, solve, and interpret optimization models, to create and run simulations, and to navigate decision trees. This course will require the use of a personal computer and Microsoft Excel.
We will use these problem-solving techniques to model and solve problems originating from the global motorsports industry, including Formula 1, IndyCar, and NASCAR. The motorsports industry demonstrates robust and evolving popularity with distinct regional and demographic trends. NASCAR continues to lead in U.S. viewership, while Formula 1 dominates globally but has experienced rapid expansion in American markets. Projections suggest Formula 1 could surpass NASCAR as the most-watched motorsport series in the United States by 2034, reflecting consistent 15% annual growth. Despite the success of its tentpole race, the Indianapolis 500, IndyCar faces more challenging viewership dynamics, often drawing smaller audiences compared to its counterparts. The overall motorsports market shows significant commercial promise, with industry projections indicating growth from $10.5 billion in 2025 to over $20 billion by 2033, powered by an 8.72% annual growth rate.
The MGMT 390 cultural competency course is taught by a local professor and will allow students to be fully immersed in a business course with a specific focus on the host city.
Both courses are supplemented with cultural activities, excursions, and company visits.
Note: This is a five-week program. The first two weeks take place in Florence, where students will complete MGMT 390: Cultural Competency with a local professor. Students will then travel together on a group flight to Madrid to spend the final three weeks with Professor Alexander, completing MGMT 306: Management Science.
